Originally re-named Udagamandalam from Ootacamund, this Tamil Nadu city is now more popularly known by its nickname, “Ooty.” Situated in Nilgiris district, it is undoubtedly one of the most well-known hill stations in South India. What is more interesting than its naming history is how this hill station was founded as a summer retreat during the British Raj period. This makes it a perfect spot for vacation, especially with family and kids.
Wander the trails of the Nilgiri Hills, reaching their highest point, the Doddabetta Peak, and stroll amidst some of the most vibrant natural blooms.
While at the Doddabetta Peak, visit the Government Rose Garden, one of the largest rose gardens in India, spread over 55-acres on the slopes of Doddabetta Peak.
Have a nostalgic ride to Coonoor in the Heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway’s Toy Train. While the picturesque route will fill anyone’s heart with joy, the ride is an absolute must if you have yound kinds.
Continue your fun rides with a boating session in the Pykara Lake, where you get to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Nilgiri Hills while floating on water.
The best time to visit Ooty is from March to June during summer or from September to November during the post-monsoon season. The weather is pleasant and perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
